The Kurang Manis (Sugar,Less) project explores our modern diet which doesn’t seem to satiate, is making us sicker than ever before and may even wipe out the human race faster than we can even dream of saving the climate! Save the humans first. The term Kurang Manis is what more Malaysians say when ordering drinks at a mamak or kopitiam, a local cafe, thinking that less condensed milk or sugar in their drinks would help keep them safe from chronic diseases - a lifestyle non-communicable disease that’s debilitating half of the Malaysian population and the cause of nine out of ten deaths in Australia. It’s also a play on a Malay phrase, Kurang Manis which means distasteful, or rude.

As a carer for my very adorable mum, Shirl, you’ll see that she had a field day in the hospital that time. Gosh! She has lived with Type 2 Diabetes for over two decades, had two malignant tumours removed from her brain and now lives with 19% kidney function remaining. We work hard to manage her condition through nutrition. One time in the hospital, she gained the nickname, “Eating Machine” from the staff. Little would anyone guess it was the food she never got at home, that made her hangry for more!

I want to change this way of eating and bring more awareness to others who battle chronic diseases like my mum. This is what I’d like to call health equity; the ability to access health information as a common person.

Who’s managing your mother’s diabetes?!

I am, Doc!

He retorted, annoyed.

Are you a doctor?!

No, I’m not but I’m her daughter and we have been managing it quite well.
